Mag Specialties can assist automotive customers with the entire lifecycle of their products. Our solution driven outlook means we assist customers with:
Design consultation, alloy selection and basic FEA. If a magnesium alloy which meets all your needs does not exist, we will work to develop one that does as we have done for other customers
Testing for chemistry, microstructure, mechanicals (quasi-static and dynamic), corrosion, flammability, and joint strength (lap & coach peel)
Translation to large scale production and investment on additional capacity when required
Extrusion prototype development and optimization
Post-extrusion machining, forming and joining consultation (Mg to Mg or Mg to Al)
Consultation on corrosion protection and coatings
Advice on handling magnesium components and machining chips/scrap at your facility
Advice on recycling
MAG has worked with the automotive industry in developing new magnesium alloys custom tailored for automotive application. As part of USCAR team and in cooperation with Ford, Chrysler and GM, we supplied the group a new magnesium alloy that dramatically reduced tension/compression mechanical property asymmetry .

MAG Specialties is one of very few magnesium companies in the world approved to supply the Formula One race car wheel supply chain.

Aerospace

aerospace magnesium extrusion
Mag Specialties has been a trusted supplier to the aerospace industry for decades with legacy business dating back to Timminco and Dow Magnesium. We are a Tier Two/Three supplier to Boeing, Bombardier and Sikorsky. We produce magnesium extrusions that meet the stringent requirements of the aerospace industry.

Recent testing and development with both the FAA and SAE have lead to the conditional approval of magnesium use in commercial aircraft seats. This conditional approval is provided when magnesium alloys meet FAA flammability test requirements and obtain certification under a Special Provision. This has expanded magnesium potential applications significantly.

Industry Benefits

Increased flight range
Magnesium weight savings, on an equal strength basis, is approximately 25% vs. aluminum depending on alloy, which allows for longer flight range per gallon of jet fuel
Increased cargo capacity
With significantly lighter magnesium seats on the plane, more cargo weight capacity is available
Significant Fuel Saving
According to American Airlines’ Fuel Smart program, each pound shed saves 14,000 gallons of fuel a year
Mag Specialties has developed new magnesium alloys that have been independently tested by a qualified 3rd party lab in the U.S. to meet the FAA flammability test requirements (chapter 25). We are currently working to further optimize these alloys and we are partnering with seat manufacturers, along with other industry manufacturers to bring significant value to the airline industry.

Cathodic Protection

magnesium cathodic protection
Magnesium’s position on the galvanic series and high current capacity is the basis for the use of magnesium as a protective anode. Two properties critical to the performance of a sacrificial anode are oxidation potential (output) and current capacity (efficiency). We ensure through extensive chemistry, production and lab testing that our products meet the customer’s desired current efficiency and performance requirements.

Mag Specialties’ cathodic protection products find applications in:
Water heater tanks
Above ground storage tanks
Steel in high resistivity electrolytes
Gas service entrance piping
Pre-polarization of seawater structures
Cathodic protection of underground pipelines

Industry Benefits

Corrosion Protection
Magnesium corrodes preferentially offering protection from corrosion to our customers’ structures
CUSTOMIZED PROTECTION
Low and high potential anodes offer custom tailored protection based on the resistivity of your electrolyte
INCREASE STRUCTURE LIFE
Our anodes offer the industry significant savings in having to replace structures less due to corrosion
Consistent and Reliable Protection
Our consistently high anode efficiency provides reliable corrosion protection offering a peace of mind to customers
Lower warranty claims
We offer water heater manufacturers assured protection through our standard of anode quality, allowing them to extend their warranty timeline and receive far fewer warranty claims in general

Construction

magnesium concrete tool
Magnesium’s resistance against high alkaline cleaners and solutions make it an excellent candidate for use in masonry tools, screeds and forms. Magnesium concrete tools can be cleaned with the same strong alkaline cleaners used for steel and, unlike aluminum tools, they will not corrode with this solution. Magnesium is also far superior to wood masonry tools as it is more durable, lasts longer, and doesn’t soak up water and thereby quickly lose surface quality.

Industry Benefits

Weight savings
Magnesium tools are 33% lighter than aluminum masonry tools improving worker ergonomics and productivity
Alkaline resistance
Magnesium tools are alkaline resistant and last longer than both aluminum and wood masonry tools
Superior surface finish
Magnesium tools produce a superior and smoother surface finish to aluminum and wood masonry tools
Endorsed by ProfessionalS
High-end masonry professionals exclusively use extruded magnesium masonry tools for the best results

Nuclear Energy Industry

Magnesium’s low neutron cross section makes it an ideal candidate for use in electronic housing applications in energy nuclear reactors. This allows the magnesium housing to protect the electronic detectors with little interference for the most accurate measurements; especially where safety detection and reliability is highly valued. Mag Specialties is one of very few trusted suppliers to the Nuclear Energy Industry.

Renewable Energy Industry

Magnesium’s light weight and good specific strength and stiffness properties lend itself as a candidate for extruded solar panel frames; especially when weight reduction of the solar module is desired. Our experience extruding many profiles allows us to handle a wide variety of shapes. We can also guide customers with machining, forming and corrosion protection concerns. Magnesium is also currently being researched for its battery storage capacity in rechargeable batteries. Magnesium’s significantly higher energy density vs. Li-ion batteries is highly desirable but there are many challenges that need to be overcome for magnesium to be a viable replacement. Mag Specialties is engaged with research institutes dedicated to finding solutions to these challenges.

Industry Benefits

Significant weight savings for solar panel frames for equal strength and stiffness with design modification up to 25% less weight
Significantly higher energy density potential exists with magnesium vs. Li-ion but many challenges still to overcome

Specialty

specialty magnesium extrusion
Magnesium finds extensive use in the lead refining and lead battery industry. Mag-Cal™ was first developed by Timminco in 1989 to eliminate the need to add magnesium and calcium separately to molten lead for removal of bismuth. This master alloy provided the industry with a much cleaner and more efficient method of addition that enabled rapid dissolution, high consistent alloy recovery and reliable bismuth control. Similarly, Cal-Al™ was offered to the lead battery industry to eliminate the need for separate additions and allow for rapid and complete alloy dissolution in the shortest time possible with the highest efficiency. Mag Specialties continues to hold our master alloy products to the same exacting standards developed by Timminco using the highest quality of raw materials.

Magnesium is also a key ingredient in many pharmaceutical, agricultural and chemical applications. It is used in Grignard reactions to produce a multitude of intermediaries and reagents for downstream products including flavors, fragrances, pharmaceutical and agricultural products. Our longstanding experience in this industry enables us to custom tailor chemistry, particle size and distribution to optimize reaction initiation rates and maximize reaction yields.

Industry Benefits

Reliability
Reliable process control and efficiency
Save Time
Optimized yields and reduced process time
Work environment
Improved work environment and safer than separate additions
